7-feet tall and 9-feet from wingtip to wingtip, Flying Unicorn Statue Joins
Grapevine's Public Art Trail
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS (December 2, 2015) - On Thursday, December 3 at 6 p.m., Grapevine will dedicate "Imagine," Grapevine's Flying Unicorn and the newest addition to Grapevine's Public Art Trail, home to more than 25 pieces of public art. "Imagine" is a tribute to all who work and volunteer in Grapevine's tourism and hospitality industry.
The symbol of the unicorn was selected during the design phase of the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) Headquarters, a unique historical replication of 19th century Texas facades depicting Grapevine's history. Across many cultures, the unicorn represents imagination flying free and that your dreams can come true on the wings of the unicorn. Grapevine is a destination where dreams come true. "Imagine," a winged unicorn, symbolizes action, dreams and wishes that come true.
The Unicorn is 9-feet from wingtip to wingtip, 6-feet two inches tall and is approximately 50-feet above the sidewalk. He is positioned in the stance of taking off, symbolizing the beginning of new dreams and memories in Grapevine. Children from area special needs programs inscribed their names on the back of the statue.
To create the statue, local artist Linda Lewis of the Grapevine Foundry was selected from among eight artists, based on the vibrancy of her unicorn design and the fact that she would involve local citizens and students in the sculpting process. She began the project in January 2015.
The CVB Headquarters South Tower features the whimsical vertical time and temperature, clock-like wind dial, and gold weathervane with its American Indian influences, all suggest a feeling of carefree time. The North Turret features the Unicorn statue, conveying the organization's mission of attracting visitors and creating lasting memories for citizens and visitors alike at Grapevine's world-class attractions, accommodations, wineries, dining, shopping and entertainment venues.
Grapevine's Public Art is funded by revenue received from cell antennas atop Grapevine water towers.
The dedication will take place Thursday, December 3, 6 p.m., 636 S. Main St., Grapevine, outside of Bingham Family Vineyards. Camera crews/photographers are welcome to attend.
