See Artifacts From and Learn About Life on the Grape Vine Prairie
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS (July 12, 2021) - The Grapevine Historical Museum, located in the replica Grapevine Ice House Co. building at the Settlement to City Museums, will reopen on Friday, July 16, 2021. The museum tells the history of agriculture, commerce, childhood and other aspects of life and culture of early residents of the Grape Vine Prairie. Learn how life on this prairie connects to the larger story of settling Texas. The museum will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The front exterior of the museum with its wooden slats, white paint and large block letters replicates the appearance of the Grapevine Ice Company, originally built in 1940. For more than 30 years, the company provided ice to Dallas, Tarrant and Denton county customers to help them keep everything from food and milk to diabetic insulin cool. For sweet summer treats, the ice was often used to make hand-cranked ice cream.
Once inside the museum, visitors will learn about ice manufacturing, farm and dairy processes and other aspects of daily life on the 19th century Grape Vine Prairie. Wander through Grapevine’s attic, packed with historic artifacts. See how children on the prairie played through the displays of dolls, doll houses and other toys. Peruse restored wedding gowns from brides of days gone by as well as many other treasures. Travel further into the area’s history with the prehistoric artifacts exhibit which features fossils of dinosaurs who once roamed the area. Each of the museum’s artifacts were received from Grapevine-area residents.
The museum is organized by the Grapevine Historical Society which was chartered by the State of Texas in 1974 for the purpose of promoting an appreciation of history, the natural and social sciences and to preserve the history of Grapevine.
