Grapevine Adds New Rolling Stock to the Grapevine Vintage Railroad

Acquisition of three new coaches will expand charter and special event business

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS (June 20, 2013) - The Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) has acquired three new coaches which will be used to expand the GVRR's special event and charter business and allow for regular route operations during heavy railroad usage such as Grapevine's North Pole Express® and Day Out With ThomasTM. The coaches are currently located in Flint, just south of Tyler, Texas and are scheduled to be transported to Grapevine today through June 22, 2013. The coaches will be in use once maintenance and restoration is completed.

As with many of Grapevine's historic buildings, properties and even the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, the coaches have a storied history. Operating between Los Angeles and San Francisco between the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, legends such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr. rode and entertained guests on these coaches. The design of the coaches encouraged live performances and even provided space for a dance floor. As the popularity of train travel declined in the 1960s, the coaches were taken out of service and purchased by a rail enthusiast and stored in East Texas for the past 40-plus years.

These three coaches, referred to as an articulated consist, are comprised of two lounge cars and one kitchen and service area coach. The connections between the coaches are open, providing the ability to see straight through from coach to coach, which is a huge selling point for groups booking special events. The articulated consist will retain its 1940s look.
